Coffeeshop Etiquette: 5 Rules You Must Know
Don't be 'that tourist'. Learn the unwritten rules of Amsterdam's cannabis culture to ensure a smooth experience.
Respect the Culture
Amsterdam's tolerance is a privilege, not a right. Tourists often mistakenly think "anything goes," but there are strict rules and etiquette.
1. Tobacco Ban is Real
You cannot smoke tobacco inside most coffeeshops. This is a strict Dutch law. If you roll a joint with tobacco, you will be asked to leave or smoke it outside.
- Solution: Most shops provide a "herbal mix" free of charge to use instead of tobacco. Or, learn to smoke "pure" (green only).
2. No Alcohol
Coffeeshops sell cannabis, coffee, and juice. They do not sell beer or alcohol. In fact, drinking alcohol and smoking weed is generally frowned upon in the local culture as it leads to "whiteys" (fainting).
3. Buy a Drink
Ideally, don't just buy weed and sit for hours. It is polite to buy a coffee, tea, or soda if you plan to use their seating area. It supports the shop and keeps the staff happy.
4. Bring ID (Essential)
It doesn't matter if you are 18 or 80—you must have valid ID. Shops face massive fines if they let minors in, so bouncers are strict. Acceptable IDs are Passports and Driver's Licenses.
5. Hats & Sunglasses Off
Many shops (especially in the center) ask you to remove hats and sunglasses upon entry. This is for security reasons (CCTV). Don't argue; just take them off for a moment while buying.
6. Where Can I Smoke?
- YES: Inside the coffeeshop, at home, or on a private balcony.
- TOLERATED: Quiet corners of parks (like Vondelpark), as long as you are discreet and not near children.
- NO: Busy streets, tram stops, or near schools. It's rude and technically finable.
